Weeping willow

Weeping willow (Salix babylonica), willow (Salicaceae) family.


It grows up to 15 m. Since the shoots and branches are very thin and elastic, they do not stand upright, they hang down. Older stems have gray-colored shells with longitudinal fractures.


Shoots are yellowish green, shiny as if polished. The tip bud is pseudo-terminal, bare single-scaled, the buds are just aligned on the shoots and spirally arranged. Its leaves are narrow, stripy, pointed at the tip and slightly serrated on the edges. The leaves, bare on both sides, are dark on the upper side and dull, light gray green on the underside. Mostly the leaves are curved. Veins are prominent and bare. Petiole is short. The trail left by the petiole on the shoot is in the form of a narrow band and there are 3 transmission beam tracks. 2n = 63, 72, 76.


Its homeland is China.


It has two varieties:


Salix babylonica var.

Salix babylonica var.glandulipilosa
